A small living room still has to support real life. People stretch out after work, share the sofa during a movie, read in a corner or make space for a guest. An L-shaped sectional supports these habits without requiring a separate ottoman.
That does not mean every small room needs a sectional. If the room only needs compact seating, a straight sofa may leave more open floor space. A sectional becomes more useful when one piece of furniture must handle lounging, occasional sleeping and storage while preserving a practical walking route.
A sofa can fit against one wall and still make the room difficult to use. Measure more than the available width. Test how the room works during the day, when the bed is open and when the sofa is being delivered.
Friheten measures approximately 230 × 151 × 66 cm in sofa mode. Mark that footprint on the floor, then follow the route people normally take between the entrance, kitchen, TV, balcony or window. As a general comfort guideline, aim for about 75–90 cm along the busiest walkway where space allows. Also check whether doors, drawers and balcony access can open normally.
The sleeping area measures approximately 204 × 140 cm. Outline the open-bed position and decide where the coffee table will go before the bed is pulled out. Where the layout permits, leaving about 35–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table can make everyday sitting more comfortable; treat this as a guideline, not a fixed rule for every apartment.
The bed should open without blocking the only path to a doorway, bathroom or balcony. If the route becomes too tight, a smaller straight sofa bed may be a better choice than any sectional.
Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair turn and elevator, not only the wall where the sofa will sit. Include door frames, handrails and elevator depth. Inside the room, note radiators, baseboards, floor vents, outlets and window openings that reduce usable space.
Use low-tack painter’s tape or flattened cardboard to mark both the sofa and open-bed footprints. Leave the outline in place for an evening, open the doors and move through the room normally. This simple test reveals problems that a floor plan alone may miss.

Friheten combines three functions in one piece: sectional seating, a pull-out sleeping surface and storage under the chaise. The chaise can be installed on the left or right, so the longer side can be positioned around a doorway, window or main walking path.
Its arm design also affects how it feels in a compact room. Friheten has one full-height arm and a lower arm on the opposite side, which can create a more open visual line than a sofa with two full-height arms. Because the sofa separates into sections, delivery through condo entrances, staircases or basement routes may also be more manageable, although the full access route still needs to be measured.
These features make Friheten flexible, not universally suitable. It is a strong option only when the sofa, open bed and walking route can all work together.

The sofa’s existing original IKEA foam is included in the base price and is not replaced unless the customer selects a new foam upgrade. Customers can choose new Soft Foam, Medium Foam or Firm Foam for an additional charge shown on the product page.

Is Friheten suitable for every small room?
No. It works best when the sofa and open-bed footprints fit without blocking essential doors or the main walking route. Marking both positions on the floor is the safest first check.
Can Friheten be carried through a tight entrance?
Its separate sections can make access easier, but the entire route still needs to be measured. Include building doors, hallways, stairs, elevator dimensions and the final turn into the room.
